Watts nets Vixens victory

Bristol Academy got off to a winning start in the new format of the WSL Continental Cup after Nikki Watts got the only goal of the game.

With a game of few chances for both sides Bristol had the better of the first half but unable to finish them off. Doncaster’s Anie O’Gorman had their first chance of the game, which was tipped over by goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain.

Moments after Natasha Harding saw her header go just past the post from a Jasmine Matthews cross on the counter attack. Jemma Rose almost made it 1 – 0 five minutes before half time when her powerful free kick was well saved by Doncaster goalkeeper Mary Earps. From the resulting corner Jess Fishlock saw her effort denied by the crossbar.

Doncaster had the first chance of the second half when O’Gorman’s shot beat Chamberlain and came back of the post.

Melissa Lawley made her debut for the Vixens coming off the bench and had an immediate impact after she beat the Belles defence and saw her shot saved by Earps.

Substitute Nikki Watts stole the headlines when a long diagonal pass from Rose found Watts and she cut in from the left and unleashed an unstoppable half volley from the corner of the box.
