Bristol Academy Reserves came away with a point at Gillingham Ladies Reserves after Georgie Presswell equalised in the 95th minute.
The home side started the stronger of the two teams in the first half, dominating play and taking control of the first 15 minutes.
After 20 minutes the Vixens had their first chance of the game after Georgie Presswell’s cross found Kim Maggs in the box whose effort went over the bar from close range.
Gillingham put the Vixens on the back foot after forcing 4 corners in the space of 5 minutes and came close from their last corner which was headed off the line by Ellie Sargent.
5 minutes before half time the Gills took the lead after the Gillingham striker beat the offside trap and was through one v one on goal and placed the ball to the right of goalkeeper Abby Evans.
Ellie Curson came close to equalising just before half time after a short corner from Gabby Bird, Curson shot was well saved by the Gillingham goalkeeper.
Gillingham scored the first goal 5 minutes into the second half, after the Gills striker’s shot was well saved by Evans and the ball rebounded to the feet of the Gillingham midfielder outside the area who scored from the rebound.
The Vixens grew stronger as the half went on, starting to dominate and have total control of the game with Maggs and Curson coming close to scoring but couldn’t find the back of the net.
After 75 minutes Abby Reynolds pass found Ashleigh Harris in space, who’s shot from 25 yards flew into the top right hand corner giving the goalkeeper no chance of saving.
The Vixens still searching for an equaliser had to wait until the 5th minute of injury time after a long throw from Kirsten Rendall was missed by the Gills defender and goalkeeper found the feet of Presswell in the 6 yard box to fire home the equaliser.
Academy coach Steve Grinham spoke to bristolacademywfc.co.uk after the game and said “We were disappointed with our first half performance as we didn’t get going and play like we know we can. It’s a tough place to come and playing on a difficult surface didn’t make it easy. After we conceded the second goal we were in total control of the game and we probably should have scored a few more goals. Full credit goes to the squad as they didn’t give up and continued to search for the equaliser, if we had a few extra minutes we felt we would have gone on and win the game.”
